painting an abstract seascape - video demonstration

Abstract seascape - acrylics, acrylic ink, vintage images and pencil on paper

You can watch me paint this abstract landscape from start to finish. This little video gives a little insight into my painting process.

Yes, I do seem to paint a million light layers on the foreground. It's the only way to get a lovely depth of colour.

It's been over a year since I made a video. Hoping its not going to be so long until the next one. Watch this space.

new, larger, abstract landscapes available

I am continuing with my series of abstracs that reflect the lovely Central Otago landscape - big skies, distant mountains, lakes, and golden fields.

Both of these new paintings are of end of the day when the sky is particularly spectacular and the colours warm and inspiring.

The first one is a sunset.

travel journals on display at Wanaka Library

Travel journals on display at Wanaka Library

For the next month I will have a number of my travel journals and urban sketches on display at the Wanaka Library. These sketchbooks and paintings are from many years of travel in New Zealand, Europe, USA and Patagonia. I will change out the paintings regularly.

Most of my sketchbooks have been sitting in a cupboard. I thought locals would be interested in seeing the hand made and commercial sketchbooks in person and to be able read some of the little stories I have written with some of the paintings.

Yesterday I had a wonderful morning sorting through my BIG pile of books choosing which paintings to display.  I have books going back to 1999, plus a couple from my childhood. It was a thoroughly positive experience to see how much I have grown in my drawing skills over the last 17 years. And many drawing were such a great trip down memory lane too. It reminded me, yet again, that it has been determination, rather than talent, that has gotten me this far. If you want something badly enough, you can make it happen!
